What are my go-to sensible hiking bottoms – so far?

Purple Rain Skirt!

Mandy ‘Purple Rain’ Bland has created the best overall skirt or kilt design. Her practical on-trail experience has paid off with an outstanding product. She is truly an expert in walking skirt design. I highly recommend you start your walking skirt experience with an adventure skirt from Purple Rain Adventure Skirts.

The website says “Purple Rain Adventure Skirts is dedicated to providing women with performance apparel that inspires the freedom of adventure without compromising style or function.”  After many months of regular use, I can attest that women and men can equally benefit from and enjoy the performance, style, and function of Ms. Bland’s skirt design.

Purple Rain Adventure Skirts are well made, have practical pockets, and are ideal for walking, backpacking, around the ranch, in the office, or as practical daily attire.

Within the Purple Rain products, there are interesting differences in the materials and weights. The fabric makes a significant difference in the feel. The weights below are for size large.

  • Granite skirt – 136g  (4.8 oz)
  • Teal skirt – 146g  (5.2 oz)
  • Granite kilt – 150g  (5.3 oz)
  • Purple skirt – 171g (6.0 oz)
  • Sandstone skirt – 179g  (6.3 oz)
  • Sandstone kilt – 203g  (7.2 oz)

Overall, the granite skirt with purple waistband is my favorite – light and ideal for walking. The teal skirt, granite kilt, and purple skirt are winners too. Range of motion is excellent.

Skirt vs Kilt? Men really do not need the extra kilt fabric. The skirt is my choice for walking and backpacking. When in town though, I will wear the kilt, as I’ve noticed fewer “funny looks”.

or (maybe) Patagonia Edge Win Skirt!

The Patagonia Edge Win skirt is my recent discovery. Patagonia describes the skirt’s material as “100% TENCEL® fabric, which is more absorbent than cotton, softer than silk and cooler than linen—the ideal summer fabric.”  They are right! This is the most comfortable of all the skirt materials I’ve worn. At 195g (6.9 oz) for size XL, the skirt is a little heavier. Yet it hangs well and sure feels great.
